Looking out from Mind, rather than up

Looking out from Mind, the infinite source of intelligenceGrowing spiritually is an eternal activity. However we often think this means that we’re starting “down here” and we’re growing upward—trying to get up there—to God. This is “pie-in-the-sky” thinking. It’s the belief that you may meet God someday. When scholastic theology (human religion) talks about growing spiritually generally it’s thought we’re disconnected from God and that we’ll never get close to God at all.

One infinite

But there’s a twist: this wasn’t Jesus’ theology—he didn’t teach this belief at all. Look in the Bible, especially John, chapter 17 and John 10: 37-38. Jesus taught us that the Christ is one with God and he prayed that we would understand this, too, so that we could understand the fact that we are also spiritually one with God—because God is Spirit and we are God’s spiritual creation.

So how did Jesus think in order to understand this? He was looking out from God’s perspective. He started with the fact that he was already spiritual, whole, good, perfect—eternally. He was seeing himself the way God saw him— as one with the Father—not in quantity, but in quality.

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
—Christ Jesus, John 17:20, 21

Total understanding

The starting point of this reasoning is really Genesis, chapter 1. This scripture tells us everything we need to know: “God saw everything thing He had made and, behold, it was very good (Genesis 1:31).” God, Mind, is very conscious of all Her infinite and eternal creation. There’s no chance within the infinite and eternal. God’s vision is omniscience—all reality, truth, and being, including our individual identities, is known and comprehended at every moment.

So, if you’re starting to understanding your true identity of being as God’s child, you’re learning to be God-like. In this process we all learn to see and prove how we’re made in God’s image—ever perfect and complete. This means we can utilize this fact, and demonstrate, that the divine Mind is our only Mind. Realizing more of this fact we can prove that our true source of being and intelligence comes from the one perfect Mind—God, or Spirit.

When man is governed by God, the ever-present Mind who understands all things, man knows that with God all things are possible.
—Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scripturesp.180

Your Mind is God

Understanding that our Mind is God helps us, understand the nature of God and ourselves. It removes the belief that we are “many” little minds or brains working independently of God. Rather, our lives, intelligence, and comprehension is tied entirely to God—to both our understanding of God, as well as understanding ourselves. Because Mind is God, and God is divine Spirit, this means we really are entirely spiritual, whole, complete. Everything that God made, and everything that is good, is part of our being, too. In other words we can trace our inheritance to one source: Spirit.

Letting this idea in, and trusting the fact that you’re spiritual, rather than material, is a healing power. This understanding is the Science of Christianity. It’s God’s law. On this truth is what Jesus based his thoughts in order to heal sickness, sin, and to raise the dead. By reasoning from this fact he proved that spiritual being and salvation come only from God, the divine Mind.

You can demonstrate health and well-being from this line of reasoning and logic, too. It’s not impossible, chance, nor “pie-in-this-sky” thinking. Rather it’s utilizing divine power. And Mary Baker Eddy’s work, Science and Health, shows us how to put this spiritual power into practice and to prove that God is our Mind—our source of health, harmony, and safety. What is more, this understanding removes fear, anxiety, doubt, sadness, sickness, sin, immorality, and replaces it with peace, harmony, clarity, trust, health, purity.

Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
